The word canon comes from the greek « ?a??? ». it means the model or the rule. It is to be distinguished from civil law. Canon right implies the whole set of laws and rules governing the life of the Catholic Church and its faithfull.

How was canon law born ?

Canon law has never ceased to evolve. First born on the Roman legal corpus, it was unified by middle age canonists through a long process compilation of sources.

Canon law as we know, learn and apply it nowadays is an inheritance of the 1917 code promulgated by pope Benedict XV. Then the canon law of the latin church was raised and promulgated by John Paul II in 1983 after more than twenty years of reflexion. Please note that the oriental Churches are ruled by a specific code, the canon code of the oriental Churches.

The 1983 seven books of canon law

Nowadays existing canon law articulates around seven books about church norms, hierarchic constitution, catholic education, sanctification and function of the Church, temporal goods of the Church, their acquisition and administration, sanctions of the Church and lawsuits.
